Red Cross Training Centre

Background

Bringing first aid into every home - this is the main aim of the Red Cross Training Centre (RCTC) of the Singapore Red Cross. At least one member of every household in Singapore will be trained and certified by the RCTC in first aid by the year 2005.

First aid is the initial assistance or treatment given to a casualty for any injury or sudden illness before the arrival of an ambulance, medical doctor or qualified person. Being first aid trained will allow one to be of crucial assistance to those in need during such times of injury or illness; helping to preserve life, limit the effects of illness or injury and to promote recovery.

Courses Conducted

The RCTC conducts:

• Standard First Aid
• Refresher First Aid
• Occupational First Aid & Refresher Occupational First Aid
• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) courses.

These are conducted by fully certified and experienced full-time staff and volunteer professionals. Besides conducting courses at the premises of the SRC, the RCTC instructors also reaches out to the community, conducting courses at the workplace, schools, community clubs and recreation clubs. These courses are heavily subsidised by the SRC, allowing many to afford them.

4,000 individuals are trained in first aid by the RCTC annually. Among those trained include employees of private and national companies, child care centre and kindergarten teachers, tertiary students and the 'man on the street'. These individuals would join the pool of trained and certified 'first aiders' who could be called upon during emergencies, to lend their skills.

The RCTC continuously strives to improve its standards in order to impart the best first aid knowledge to the community. Its courses are regularly reviewed and customised to meet the changing needs of the community. Instructors are professionally trained in the areas of first aid and teaching.
