Background
The SRC has been providing an ambulance service since its set-up in 1949. However, it was only in 1973 that the service was fully utilised to provide non-emergency transportation for those who need to be admitted and discharged from hospitals, as well as those who require to visit hospitals for regular check-ups.
The Red Cross Ambulance Service today boasts a fleet of fully equipped ambulances and a pool of trained staff that provides non-emergency ambulance service to the needy and less fortunate in our community. This service targets 3,000 trips annually. The SRC also heavily subsidises the cost of needy patients who are unable to afford payment for the service.
The Red Cross Ambulance Service is also a participating organisation of the CISCO Centralised Despatch Scheme which was set-up to centralise the resources of non-emergency ambulance service to the community.
First Aid Public Duty & Disaster Preparedness
Besides providing the non-emergency ambulance service, the Red Cross has a pool of committed volunteers from the Voluntary Aid Detachments Division of the SRC who lend their time and skills in the provision of the first aid coverage. The SRC provides first aid coverage at over 300 public events a year.
As part of its disaster preparedness strategy, the SRC continuously trains staff and volunteers in equipping them with first aid knowledge and other skills that would prepare them to respond when needed during emergencies and disasters. In this, the SRC works closely with the Singapore Civil Defence Force and participates in their National Emergency exercises throughout the year, in various parts of the community.
How You Can Help
You can make a difference in many ways. First aid trained volunteers are welcome to assist in the operation of the non-emergency ambulance service. Volunteers are needed to help man the Red Cross Ambulance Hotline and in providing skills and expertise in marketing and promoting the service. The SRC also needs individuals who are willing to be trained as Red Cross Ambulance drivers and volunteer in driving the ambulances for first aid coverage duties.
In addition, the SRC also seeks your financial assistance in adopting needy patients who require regular ambulance service. This would help the SRC tremendously in extending our service more to the needy and less fortunate in our community.
